How we decide what is worth your time

The Wellington Ledger is small and independent, based on Quebec Street in Guelph. We write for adult readers who like clear, friendly prose and stories that stay useful long after the day they are published. Here is how we think about the work.

Start close to home

Most of our best ideas begin within walking distance: a market stall, a community garden, a volunteer group that quietly keeps a park tidy. Priya Sandhu reports on these neighbourhood projects, and we look for the practical details a reader could act on, such as where to find them, when they are open and how to take part. A town feels like home because of these small things, and they deserve patient, accurate attention.

Write about people with care

Our profiles of musicians, actors, writers and makers draw on their public work and are written with respect. Daniel Tremblay has covered Canadian stages for two decades, and he brings that familiarity to the culture pages. We do not invent quotations or claim private access. When we describe a career, we describe what can be heard, watched or read, and we let the work speak for itself.

Plan a good day out

Gordon Bell has driven and hiked across ten provinces, and his guides to parks, museums and scenic stops are written to be used. They say what to bring, how long a visit tends to take and what to look for once you arrive. We favour evergreen advice over fleeting events, so a guide you save today still helps next season.

Be open about money

The free magazine is the heart of the site. To support it, our editors also offer a few paid reader services, such as story-pitch reviews, walking-guide plans and writing workshops. They are described plainly on the Prices page, with what each includes. Nothing is hidden, and reading the magazine never requires buying anything.
